Alabama appeals court upholds Houston County death sentence

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals has upheld a death sentence for a man who killed an elderly Dothan woman and took her Cadillac.

In an unanimous decision today, the appeals court affirmed Antonio Devoe Jones' capital murder conviction for the beating death and burglary of Ruth Kirkland.

The appeals court also said the death sentence was appropriate for the crime.

Kirkland was an 80-year-old widow who lived alone.

She was beaten to death with one of her walking canes and a chair leg on New Year's Eve of 1999.

Jones was arrested that night in Dothan while driving the victim's white Cadillac.
