Auburn Resident Dies After His Bicycle Hit on Opelika Road

Lee County Coroner Bill Harris says 25-year-old Jose Manuel Guzman Hernandez, who listed an Auburn address, was struck by a westbound vehicle while attempting to cross Opelika Road on his bicycle in front of the Colonial University Village mall Monday evening.

EAMC paramedics and Auburn Police were summoned to the scene of the accident which occurred around 8:25 p.m. on Monday. 

Harris says due to the severity of Hernandez's injuries, the Lifesaver helicopter was called to the scene, and Hernandez was airlifted to Columbus Regional Hospital in Georgia.  He died from his injuries in the emergency room of Columbus Regional at 9:20 p.m. on Monday.

The vehicle that struck Hernandez fled the scene.  Police have no suspects at this time and request that anyone with any information of the accident call the Auburn Police Department at 334-501-3100.

Hernandez's body was sent to the Alabama Dept. of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for an autopsy.  The hit and run accident remains under investigation by the Auburn Police Dept, the Lee County Coroners Office, and the Alabama Dept. of Forensic Sciences.
