Someone is trying to disturb the dead in the Bethany Baptist Church cemetery in New Brockton. In particular the grave of 21-month old of Angel Marie Whitley. Gale Whitley says she'll never forget it. She took a cell phone picture of the single word spelled in black paint, splattered across her daughter's tombstone.
"I don't know who's doing it but I wished they stop," said Gale Whitley.
What makes this especially cruel is the fact that Angel was murdered. She died two years ago at the hands of her mother's boyfriend.
And therein lies the potential answer. Gale Whitley says her family made the decision to take Angel off life support. Gale says her little girl died in her arms, so the possible motive? Revenge.
New Brockton police won't say who might be responsible. Gale Whitley claims she has an idea but has no proof. However, all agree this was an isolated incident, not the beginning of trend in the cemetery. Neighbor Thomas Capps lives across the street in the shadows of the cemetery.
"I do think it was some kind of revenge. Otherwise, we just don't have a problem with cemetery vandalism around here. The sheriff and police do a good job of patrolling the area," said Capps.
Angel's headstone has since been cleaned and washed but her mom is still looking for answers, something her daughter's grave has yet to reveal.
A jury convicted Whitley's boyfriend, Steven Preachers in connection to Angel's death. Preachers is serving a life sentence, but Whitley does not believe anyone connected to Preachers had anything to do with the vandalism.
Preachers reportedly took Angel by the legs and slammed her head against the wall because she wouldn't stop crying.
