Uniontown man found guilty of capital, intentional murder

MARION, Ala. - A Perry County jury found a Uniontown man guilty of capital murder and recommended Thursday that he be sentenced to life without parole.

Prosecutors had asked jurors to sentence 25-year-old Charlie Bennett to die by lethal injection.

Jurors found Bennett guilty Thursday of capital and intentional murder.

If the judge decides not to follow the jury's recommendation, Bennett could become the 194th person on Alabama's death row and the only one from Perry County.

A prosecutor said he murdered Lawrence Smith and Kenneth Dixie in June 2004 less than two months after he was accidentally released from prison early while serving time for a felony bank robbery conviction in 2004.

Bennett was convicted of killing the two men on an isolated stretch of Highway 53 near Marion.

Evidence showed the victims were shot them from behind as he sat in the back seat of the vehicle.
