BREWTON, Ala. -- A weekend bicycle ride ended in a hospital stay for Escambia County Sheriff Grover Smith. His Chief Deputy, Major Mike Murphy, said Smith was riding his bike when he lost control and was thrown to the pavement Saturday morning.
It happened about 10:30 a.m. in the Foshee community, west of Brewton.
Murphy said the sheriff suffered a fractured skull and facial injuries. He was initially treated at a Brewton-area hospital, then transferred to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida. A hospital spokesman would not release Smith's condition, but he is facing surgery.
According to Murphy, the sheriff was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Smith has served as sheriff since 2002 and faces no Republican opposition in today's general election.
