University Officials Urge No More Cuts

University officials from Alabama, Auburn and Alabama State are urging the Legislature to find a way next week to prevent any more cuts in the state education budget. But they aren't endorsing any particular plan for preventing budget cuts.

Governor Siegelman is calling the Legislature into special session December fourth to shore up the state education budget. He has recommended doing that by raising business taxes by 160 million dollars annually.

The presidents of Alabama, Auburn and Alabama State had a news conference on the Statehouse steps Tuesday with athletic officials from the three schools. Alabama State football coach L.C. Cole said the university is barely surviving now and another year of proration would be devastating. Alabama President Andrew Sorensen said proration makes it harder to recruit all students, including athletes. He said the governor encouraged university officials to have the news conference.
