Riley Responds to Victory

The election behind him, Republican Gov. Bob Riley says his second term will include more coalition building with Democratic leaders at the Statehouse.

Speaking in a news conference in Birmingham Wednesday, Riley reflected on his victory over Democrat Lucy Baxley and looked ahead to the coming four years.

Riley says that like in his first term, he plans to work with Republicans and the Democrats who control the Legislature to get things done.

He says he was yet to speak with Democrat Jim Folsom Junior, who was elected lieutenant governor. But he says Folsom's staff is pledging to work with the administration.

Speaking about national politics, Riley says Republican losses in Congress weren't as bad as many expected, even though Democrats won control of the House.

And Riley dismissed questions about whether he could possibly be a contender for vice president in two years.
