House Speaker Seth Hammett says he expects to be elected in January to what would be a record-tying third term presiding over the lower chamber.
Another south Alabama politician, the late Jimmy Clark of Eufaula, is the only other lawmaker to serve more than two terms as speaker. Hammett says he doesn't know of any lawmakers planning to run against him for speaker. Hammett of Andalusia had plenty so smile about today as he talked about how Democrats easily fought off a Republican attempt to seize control of the Legislature for the first time in more than 100 years.
House Democratic Caucus leader Rep. Ken Guin, D-Carbon Hill, said he agrees that Hammett will be re-elected speaker when the Legislature meets in an organizational session in January.
