Russell County teacher stabbed in home invasion

A Russell County High School teacher was attacked in his Columbus, Georgia, home late Wednesday night.

Columbus Police Lt. Steve Cox said 55-year-old Jimmy Averett was stabbed several times by an unknown assailant. He said the home invasion happened about 11:30 p-m. Cox said the male suspect forced his way into Averett's house, then attacked him with a knife. Averett, despite his wounds, managed to escape through the back door and flee to a neighbor's house.

Cox said the neighbor transported him to a Columbus hospital where he's listed in critical condition today. The male suspect, who remains at large, fled the scene in the victim's 2007 white Nissan Titan pickup truck.
