Sex Offender who Fled to Mexico Returned to Escambia County

BREWTON, Ala. --  A repeat sex offender who fled his sentencing hearing and flew to Mexico City is back in Alabama today. Escambia County Sheriff's Major Mike Murphy said 34-year-old Larry Richard Chavers was returned to the county jail yesterday afternoon.

On November 9th, Chavers, a resident of Jay, Florida, was sentenced to forty-one years in prison for molesting an eight-year-old girl.

The U.S. Marshals Service said the Mexican government refused to allow Chavers to enter the country and he was forced to take a return flight to Miami, where he was arrested by U.S. Marshals.

Chavers was convicted November first of sodomizing and sexually abusing the girl, now 11 years-old, while he lived with her family in Escambia County. He was charged in 2004.

Authorities are trying to determine if he will face additional charges following his escape.
