COPY-Alabama give new protections to tenants in new year

MONTGOMERY, Ala. Starting January first, Alabama will have a law to spell out the rights and responsibilities for landlords and tenants. Kimble Forrister of Alabama Arise says the new law helps level a playing field that used to be titled toward landlords.

The new law requires landlords to provide safe, habitable housing. It also provides a way for tenants to get out of leases when landlords don't make major repairs.

Greg Masood of the Alabama Association of Realtors says the law also helps property managers. He says it creates one standardized law that pre-empts city and county ordinances. And it speeds up the eviction process for getting rid of bad tenants.
