MAZE & RICKS CAP ALABAMA FOOTBALL RECRUITING CLASS AT 24 SIGNEES

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Twenty-four high school seniors have signed letters of intent to play for the University of Alabama football team.

      The 24 players come from seven states - Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas.

      As listed by position, the Crimson Tide add to their roster two offensive linemen, four defensive backs, two wide receivers, three running backs, six defensive linemen, one quarterback, four linebackers, one tight end and one player designated at overall athlete - though several of the players played multiple positions in high school and could move to other positions once they arrive on campus.

      Two players - defensive back Kareem Jackson and running back Jamar Taylor - already are attending the University. Both enrolled in January, began taking classes for the spring 2007 semester and will be able to participate in Alabama's spring football practices tentatively slated to begin March 24. The other 22 players have signed national letters of intent today.

      Among the 24 players are:

* Two members of the Parade magazine prep All-America team - linebacker Rolando McClain and defensive tackle Kerry Murphy.

* Three players rated among the top 100 nationally by the Rivals.com - McClain (35th), Murphy (56th) and wide receiver Brandon Gibson (100th).

* One player rated among the top 100 nationally by USA Today - defensive tackle Nick Gentry (98th).

* One player rated among the top 100 nationally by Scout.com - defensive end Luther Davis (84th).

* One player rated among the top 100 nationally by recruiting analyst Tom Lemming - Gentry (98th).

* One player rated among the top 100 nationally by PrepStar - McClain.

* One player rated among the top 100 junior college players nationally by SuperPrep - defensive back Michael Ricks (37th).

* Two players selected for the U.S. Army All-America game - Davis and quarterback Nick Fanuzzi.

* Three SuperPrep All-Americans - Davis, McClain and Murphy.

* Three members of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Super Southern 100 - Davis, McClain and Murphy.

* Nine players named on the Alabama Top 30 by Rivals.com - McClain (1st), Murphy (2nd), Gibson (5th), defensive tackle Josh Chapman (12th), offensive lineman Patrick Crump (13th), Gentry (14th), offensive lineman William Vlachos (16th), athlete Marquis Maze (18th) and linebacker Chavis Williams (22nd).

* Seven players listed among the top 36 prospects in Alabama by SuperPrep - Murphy (2nd), McClain (4th), Gibson (5th), Chapman (13th), Gentry (14th), Crump (18th) and Vlachos (23rd).

* Four players named to the Scout.com Southeast 100 - Murphy (10th), McClain (48th), Gibson (80th), and Watkins (99th).

Marquis MAZE, ATH, Tarrant, Ala. (Tarrant HS) - A versatile athlete who played tailback, quarterback, wide receiver, defensive back and returned kickoff and punts at Tarrant High School ... played in the 2007 Max Emfinger High School All-American Game in Shreveport, La. ... He ran nine times for 115 yards and scored two touchdowns in the game ... He averaged 17.2 yards per carry ... Rated as a three-star wide receiver by Scout.com and Rivals.com ... Rated as the No. 52 best athlete by Rivals.com ... Rated as the 18th best player in Alabama by Rivals.com ... He had nearly 3,000 all-purpose yards and over 30 touchdowns during his junior and senior seasons ... As a senior, Maze had more than 1,200 all-purpose yards and 15 touchdowns, despite playing only six games due to an injury ... After the first and second-team quarterbacks were injured, Maze stepped into that role as the Wildcats posted a 10-0 regular-season record before losing in the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs ...
