Covering West Alabama: Demopolis Mayor Indicted

The mayor of Demopolis has been indicted by a Marengo County grand jury.

The Demopolis Times is reporting that mayor Cecil -p- Williamson was indicted on two felony counts. District Attorney Greg Griggers told the paper that the mayor is accused of knowingly and intentionally obtaining city funds for personal use.

The Times reports that the indictments came after a unanimous request by the city council and that the charges involved the mayor getting health benefits that were never approved by the council.

Two council members confirmed the story for WSFA 12 News, but they did not want to be identified. WSFA 12 News also called Mayor Williamson and the district attorney neither returned our calls.
