Pickens County Sheriff's officers and Reform police arrested 33 people after raiding a cockfight. The arrests came Sunday night at a Zion Road residence.
Officers got a tip that a cockfight was going on at the home of Robby Glasgow and his wife, Sandra Dale northeast of Gordo in Pickens. Sheriff David Abston says the couple were among those arrested and charged with cockfighting, promoting gambling and illegal possession of alcohol. The penalty for cockfighting in Alabama is a maximum fine of $50. Promoting gambling carries a maximum punishment of one year in prison or $1,000 fine.
Possession of alcohol carries a fine of between $100 and $1,000. Abston says there were at least 11 dead roosters and hundreds of live roosters at the site. Authorities are considering additional charges of cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor carrying a maximum punishment of six months in prison or a $3,000 fine.
