West Forest Intermediate Student Takes Gun to School

Scary moments at West Forest Intermediate School in Opelika on Thursday when officials discover a students has a gun.

School officials say they were told by another student that the fifth grader had a loaded nine millimeter in his back pack.

Superintendent Dr. Mark Neighbords said it's unclear how he got the weapon, but says parents should keep a close eye on these things.

The 12-year-old will be held in the Lee County Youth Development Center until his court proceedings.

Officials say there will be changes next year as far as book bags and dress codes, but they've been planned for a while.
