Decision Day in Alabama: The Competition Is On

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Officials in Alabama and Louisiana are eagerly waiting to find out which state will be the site of a new steel mill. German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp said it would announce today the site it has chosen for its mill: a location in St. James Parish along the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans or a site near Mobile.

Alabama's legislature on Wednesday passed a group of tax breaks for the mill -- on top of a $400 million dollar incentives package. Louisiana lawmakers pressed ahead yesterday with plans to boost an incentives package, only hours before the company was to choose the location for the new $2.9 billion dollar mill.

The steel mill will employ 2700 people. It's expected to begin operation in 2010.
