Hundreds Face Layoffs In Abbeville

This could be a tough summer for hundreds of employees at the Westpoint Stevens plant in Abbeville.

The company says it will lay off around 500 people, a hundred or so will get to stay for the time being. Company officials in New York say they're making these restructuring moves so they can expand their overseas operations.

Abbeville mayor Rhett Taylor says they've already made plans to recruit another business to take over the plant.

"We have 3 avenues we're pursuing right now and hopefully we get one of the three," said Mayor Taylor. Taylor declined to identify the prospects.

Those 500 jobs will be gone by the end of August and it's not just the Abbeville plant affected. The company plant in Opelika will lose 360 jobs. Westpoint Stevens manufactures bedding products.
