Jesse James Spikes, a 25 year old man from Red Level, sits in the Covington County jail tonight.
He is charged with "torture and willful abuse of a child".
His 15 month old daughter was taken to the emergency room Wednesday night after he struck her in the face.
The blow was hard enough to render the child unconscious.
Investigators were called to the Andalusia Regional Hospital to investigate the suspected child abuse.
They then notified the Department of Human Resources to the situation and attempted to locate Spikes for questioning.
Subsequently, Spikes was arrested after investigators passed him driving down the highway.
He was questioned and later admitted that he had struck the baby, but says he did not intend to injure her.
Bond was originally set at $10,000, but District Court Judge "Trippy" Mcguire raised that bond to $250,000.
Covington County investigator Wesley Snodgrass tells WSFA 12 News that the baby is "ok" and was released into the custody of her mother.
