Alabama State running back Jay Peck was one of four Hornets named to the 2007 preseason All-SWAC football team announced Tuesday at the annual SWAC media day.
Peck was joined by Ivora Hall on the first team, while Brandon Averett and Noel Alphonso were named to the second team.
Last season, Peck, a senior from Columbus, Ohio, gained 1,086 yards and eight touchdowns on 249 carries. He finished as the second most productive rusher in the conference, and is shooting to become only third running back in ASU history to have back-to-back 1,000 yard season.
Hall, a senior offensive tackle from Memphis, Tennessee, was second team All-SWAC last year. The mammoth senior, 6-2 and 328 pounds, was the leader of the offensive line that opened holes for Peck and one of the top rushing attacks in the conference.
Averett, a junior from Phenix City, Alabama, was set to emerge as one of the SWAC's top cornerbacks before he was injured early in the 2006 season. He'd been named second team all-conference before hurting his wrist and earning a red-shirt.
Alphonso became a consistent contributor to the ASU defense in his freshman season. The defensive lineman from Tallahassee, Florida, totaled 17 tackles, including 9.5 for loss. He also made 2.5 sacks for minus 10 yards.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff quarterback Chris Wallace and Southern defensive back Jarmaul George were named SWAC preseason Offensive and Defensive players of the year.
The SWAC's predicted order of finish was also announced.
The Hornets were picked to finish fifth in the SWAC eastern division.
Alabama A & M was picked to repeat as eastern division champs, as was Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the western division.
