Williams Named Lowndes County Sheriff

Governor Bob Riley Monday appointedCharle W. "Chip" Williams Junior as Lowndes County Sheriff. He will replace long time Sheriff Willie Vaughner, who died earlier this month.

Williams, who lives in Fort Deposit, is a veteran law enforcement officer with extensive experience as a sheriff's deputy and investigator. He currently serves as a Parole OfficerSupervisor for the Alabama Board of Pardons and Parole.

Riley, in a statement Monday, said he's confident Williams "will serve the people of Lowndes County well."

The appointment is effective immediately.

Vaughner had served in the post since 1993. He died July 13th at age 58.
