Editorial: Children

When we began editorials again last year on WSFA 12 News, our first one focused on making Alabama the best place in the country to raise a child.

Looks like we've regressed.

The annual Kids Count data shows we've slipped from 43rd to 48th best in the country in the past year.

We rank in the bottom 10 in children living in poverty, percentage of children in single parent households and infant, child and teen death rates.

We can and must do better.

Investing in children will ultimately make our state tops in quality of life.

We've made progress in the high school drop out percentage and the teen birth rate.

We need to continue to improve in both categories and focus on child poverty.

Investments made today to fund and support the well-being of children will be returned many times over.
