Logger Killed by Lightning Strike in Monroe County

MONROEVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a logger was killed when he was struck by lightning near the Franklin community in north Monroe County.

Monroe County Coroner Robert Malone said Johnny Montgomery of Beatrice was part of a crew working at Preyear Swamp when a lightning bolt hit him around 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Efforts to revive Montgomery were unsuccessful.

According to the National Weather Service publication Storm Data, Alabama ranks 12th in the nation for lightning related deaths.

Between 1959 and 2003 there have been 101 deaths.
