The University of Alabama has announced its 2007-08 basketball schedule which includes 15 teams that advanced to postseason play in 2007, an SEC-Big East Showdown game against Georgetown, a tournament trip to Las Vegas for the Findlay Las Vegas Classic, and a home date with the two-time defending National Champions.
"I think it's an unbelievably difficult schedule, which is good. We want that," said Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried who begins his tenth season with the Crimson Tide and has won 20 or more games in five of his past seven seasons, including 2007. "I think we've got some great intersectional games along with some games in our region that will be challenging as well."
The schedule includes 17 regular season home games and a November 5 exhibition game against North Alabama. The first two games of the Las Vegas Classic begin in Tuscaloosa where Alabama hosts Wofford on December 17 and Texas Pan American on December 19 before travelling to Las Vegas to play NIT team Missouri State in the semifinals on December 22 and then either 2007 NCAA team Purdue or Iowa State in the December 23 final tournament game.
Alabama opens its 2008 Southeastern Conference schedule at home on January 8 against the two-time defending national champions, the Florida Gators. ESPN will televise that matchup. ESPN will also televise Alabama's January 29 home game against NCAA tournament team Tennessee its December 5 SEC-Big East Showdown game in Birmingham against NCAA tournament team Georgetown.
Ten teams that made the 2007 NCAA tournament field are on the Tide's schedule, including Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Belmont, Georgetown, George Washington, Arkansas, Vanderbilt and Purdue. 2007 NIT teams the Tide plays include Missouri State, Clemson, Georgia, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
"One thing that jumps out at me in our conference schedule is that six of our last nine are on the road which obviously makes things a little more difficult," said Gottfried of a stretch that includes a February 6 date at Mississippi State followed by a February 9 trip to Lexington to play at Kentucky; a home game on February 13 then back-to-back road trips to South Carolina and Auburn followed by a home date with Arkansas and back-to-back road trips to Ole Miss and LSU. Alabama ends the regular season at home against Vanderbilt on March 8 where it's "Senior Day" game will feature All-SEC point guard Ronald Steele and starter Mykal Riley.
Non-Conference road trips include a November 28 stop at Texas A&M and a November 13 game at Mercer.
"I like our schedule. I think it will be a great challenge. I think it stays consistent with the fact that we have played one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation every year. This year will be no different," said Gottfried.
Alabama will host its annual Crimson/White intrasquad game on Tuesday, October 30 at 7 p.m. CT. That event is free to the public. It plays North Alabama in a November 5 exhibition game and officially opens the season against Troy on Friday, November 9 at 7 p.m. CT.
Season ticket information is available on the Tide's official website, www.rolltide.com.
