Montgomery's New Bus Transfer Center to Open Monday

It's empty now, but come Monday nearly five thousand people will pass through the new Montgomery Bus Transfer Center every day.  "We run from 5:30 in the morning until 9:30 at night," says General Manager Kelvin Miller.

The new facility is home to the Montgomery Area Transit Systems downtown operations.  Miller says, "The chairs we have is the passenger waiting area. We have a lot of windows where the passengers can see the buses come in."

The change will be like night and day for passengers. Right now, they have to wait outside - rain or shine - freezing cold or boiling hot.   "Now we have a covered, air conditioned place for our passengers," says Miler.

The idea of having a cool, clean place to wait, is taking off with riders. "It's a definite improvement. It will be nice to be out of the elements," said Hope Pinkerton.

It's more than just a place for passengers. The new intermodal center will eventually offer access to the riverwalk and a parking deck.  Miller says,  "People may come in, park here and take the bus."

While a date hasn't been set for those additions, the wait for the Transfer Center should arrive on schedule next week.   In about a year, the Transit System hopes to have electronic signs, like the ones you see in an airport, to let riders know exactly when their bus will arrive.

MATS will reach another milestone Thursday.  It will welcome its one millionth rider this year.

The new Transit Center will open this coming Monday. It's located at 495 Moulton Street next to Union Station train shed and the Montgomery Advertiser offices.
