State Trooper Arrested on Sex Abuse Charges

Facing sexual abuse charges, the head of the Birmingham post of the Alabama State Troopers turned himself in to Pelham police in Shelby County Friday.

Director of the Alabama Department of Public Safety Colonel Chris Murphy had fired Captain Keith Kelley just hours earlier.

Kelley is charged with first-degree sodomy and first-degree sexual abuse.   His bond is $100,000 for each charge.

DPS spokeswoman Martha Earnhardt said Murphy put Kelley on mandatory leave yesterday and confiscated his equipment.

An internal DPS inquiry was also launched in cooperation with Pelham's criminal investigation.
