Economic Boom In Opelika

Much like the Auburn Tigers, Opelika appears to be on a winning streak. The Tigers have won two in a row. It's two years in a row and counting for Opelika with Tigertown, the region's newest shopping district.

"We've been blessed," said Opelika's economic executive director Al Cook.

What was a 150 acre pine tree field is now home to scores of national chains and 2,000 jobs. Call it a transformation of sorts when you consider it wasn't that long ago when Opelika relied on the textile industry for its tax base but not anymore.

"If you don't grow, you get left behind. We have 3 phases already built and will soon be working on phase 4," said Cook.

Add it all up and you're talking about additional $7 million in sales tax dollars for Opelika. No small change for a town of around 25,000 people.

Opelika is also home to 5 automobile suppliers, supplying the area with 2,000 jobs as well.

Al Cook couldn't talk about it now but promises even more new developments in the very near future. The promise of winning more retail battles while the Auburn Tigers hope to make it 3 in a row this weekend.
