Police Investigate City's 37th Murder

It happened just before 7:00 Saturday night.

A group of friends was hanging out in a parking lot at a Montgomery apartment complex.

Police say nothing was out of the ordinary, until two men showed up.

At least one of them was armed.

"Two black males approached them, attempted to rob them," MPD's Capt. Huey Thornton said of the victims.

At that moment, authorities say, the gunman opened fire, fatally shooting Joel Peres, 20, of Montgomery.

While police deal with such crimes on a regular basis, the language barrier separating the Spanish Speaking victims from law enforcement risked muddling eyewitness accounts at the scene.

"The problem you run into with that is whether or not [an officer is] interpreting the information just as its being given by the people we're talking to," Thornton explained.

Eventually, Montgomery police were able to get a description of the car: a white Chevrolet Camaro, likely to be a 90's model.

Authorities say they know the vehicle all too well.

"We've had other recent reports of robberies involving that particular vehicle," Thornton said.

The suspects of the murder are still on the run.

Now, authorities try to piece together the crime.  It's a task--they say--that's impossible without help from the public.

If you have any information on the murder of Joel Peres, call Montgomery area Crime Stoppers at (334) 215-STOP.
