Local War Hero and Fellow POW with Senator John McCain Dies

A local war hero who spent seven years in a prisoner of war camp with Arizona Senator John McCain has died.

74-year-old retired Air Force Colonel Warren Lilly died over the weekend after a sudden fall.

Lilly was shot down over Cambodia during the Vietnam War and spent more than seven years as a prisoner of war.

Senator McCain issued the following statement in regards to Lilly's death:

"Bob was not only a good friend, but a real American hero. Throughout the years we spent together as prisoners in Hanoi, I was inspired by his strength and loyal patriotism.

"The news of Bob's death was deeply saddening, and I mourn his loss along with his family and friends. He was like a brother. Bob will be greatly missed, but never forgotten."

Colonel Lilly's funeral is set for Tuesday at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home.

Visitation is set for 1:30 in the afternoon and the funeral, with full military honors, is at 2:30.

Lilly, who retired from Maxwell Air Force Base, earned more than 18 Purple Hearts in his career.
