WSFA 12 News Exclusive: MRSA Survivor Speaks

June Ingram speaks to WSFA's Cody Holyoke during an exclusive interview. June Ingram speaks to WSFA's Cody Holyoke during an exclusive interview.

June Ingram, 65, lives with her husband Richard in Montgomery.  She knows MRSA, the drug-resistant strain of staph infection, all too well.

"I didn't care if I lived or died.  I was so sick," she admitted.

After contracting the disease in July through a blister on her foot, Ingram spent months in the hospital, most of which she doesn't even remember.

The existing memories are hard to swallow.

"If it wasn't for my family giving me encouragement each day, I wouldn't have made it," Ingram said.

The Staphylococcus--or "Staph"-- bacteria is common...About 30 % of the population carries the germs at any given time.

With the recent deaths of a Virginia high school student and a young girl in Mississippi, the new drug-resistant strain has health experts concerned.

"It used to be something that was primarily a hospital or long-term care facility problem.  Now we have community acquired MRSA," said Dr. Charles Woernle of the Alabama Department of Public Health.

Ingram doesn't know where she got the infection, but according to her, that's not the issue.

It's the aftermath of the disease that proves difficult.

"It's really hard.  It affects the whole body," she explained.

Health experts say the "MRSA" strain, while dangerous, shouldn't be a reason to panic.

"We need to continue to address it, but it's not an imminent hazard," Woernle said.

After weeks of rehabilitation, June Ingram is living proof that surviving such a deadly disease is possible.

"I'm very, very fortunate," she said.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
