Hyundai Announcement Expected Monday

Chun Mon-Ku, Chairman of the Hyundai Motor Company (at right), will probably help in making the announcement that's expected Monday about whether his company will be coming to Montgomery. A meeting is scheduled for six o'clock, with an announcement following at seven.

Hyundai is considering a site just south of the city in Hope Hull as well as a site in Kentucky to build a new automotive manufacturing plant. The new plant will build Hyundai Sonatas and Santa Fe SUVs, among other vehicles, and employ about 2000 people. Both Alabama and Kentucky have offered Hyundai lucrative incentives.

Montgomery mayor Bobby Bright spoke to WSFA at Monday's regularly scheduled city council work session. He explained that at the very same hour, officials from Alabama and Hyundai were ironing last minute details, like police and fire protection. Mayor Bright felt that the fact that negotiations were continuing, meant that Montgomery was still in the running.
