State School Board Decides Not to Change Bible Textbook Vote

Members of the state board of education have decided not to rescind their votes for a Bible literacy textbook even though some approved it unwittingly.

The book, titled "The Bible and Its Influence," was at the center of two years of contentious debate in the Legislature.

However, it was quietly approved on Oct. 11 along with more than 2,500 other books on a list that was recommended by the state textbook committee.

All but one of the seven board members who voted to approve the list admitted they did not realize the Bible literacy book was included, but the board decided not to review the matter further.

The board's approval of the list allows local systems to use state money to buy the book, but it still has to be approved at the local level.
