Retirement Systems Of Alabama To Bring New Changes To Downtown Montgomery

Downtown Montgomery is about to undergo a dramatic change thanks to the Retirement Systems of Alabama.

WSFA 12 News has learned that the R.S.A. has finalized a deal with the state to buy a half-block of property between Monroe Street and Dexter Avenue bordered by Decatur street and North Bainbridge Street.

Within the next 2 weeks, the old public health building at Monroe and Decatur is slated to be demolished. Then, selected demolition will begin on the old judicial building off Dexter. That building was originally built in the early 20's as a masonic hall. It became the Alabama Supreme Court in 1940. The court moved in the early 1990's.

Most of the historical judicial building will be preserved and incorporated in the new R.S.A. office building. That construction will begin in January.
