Ugly, metal fillings, also called "amalgams", greatly detract from your smile and are especially noticeable in lower back teeth. Dr. Strickland places only non-metallic, tooth-colored fillings called "composites" which are extremely strong, safe, long-lasting, and much more attractive:
- will not leak like metal fillings so that there is less chance of decay
- bonds to tooth structure (Metal fillings do not bond; they simply occupy space.)
- can replace small, metal fillings
An inlay conserves even more tooth structure than an onlay and is used to replace small metal fillings. Both all-porcelain onlays and inlays are highly attractive because they achieve ultimate control of shape, color, and size. Research shows that bonded porcelain inlays and onlays can equal strength of natural teeth. An all-porcelain onlay is more conservative than a crown as it allows the conservation of more tooth structure. It is used to replace very large metal fillings.
