Committee Against Same Sex Benefits

A House committee has approved a bill that would prevent same-sex partners from receiving state benefits. The House Ways and Means-General Fund committee approved the bill on a voice vote.

The sponsor, Representative Scott Beason of Gardendale, says the state would provide health insurance and other benefits for gay employees. But he says it would not provide the benefits for same-sex partners. Beason says he does not know of any employees who have requested benefits for same-sex partners. But he says he became concerned when he heard that a college in the state had considered offering such benefits. The bill now goes to the Senate.
