Court System Threatens Cut Backs

Court officials say they will be forced to suspend jury trials and layoff part-time employees if they don't get additional money from the Legislature. Court official Rich Hobson says the court system will fall $2.7 million short this year unless the Legislature approves emergency money in the remaining five days of the session.

Hobson says the Legislature needs to pass a supplemental appropriation to prevent loss of services. He says the courts may have to suspend jury trials, layoff 129 part-time employees, reduce of supplies, halt new courthouse furnishing purchases and cancel education training meetings.
