A tanker truck carrying acid lie on its side Tuesday afternoon at the Interstate 65 on-ramp at West South Boulevard.
The Alabama Department of Environmental Management said the trailer had a "pen-hole" sized leak that spilled acid at a rate of approximately one gallon per hour and it was quickly contained.
At noon firefighters were seen building a dirt bank around the overturned truck to keep diesel fuel and the corrosive acid from mixing.
Officials tell WSFA 12 News if the two substances mixed it could catch on fire or explode.
Another truck from Atlanta offloaded the remaining acid.
