A ceremonial groundbreaking was held Tuesday to kick off construction on the new Hyundai automotive plant in south Montgomery. Hyundai Automotive Group Chairman Mong Koo Chung announced the formation of a new subsidiary called Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, LLC, which will be responsible for plant operations in the Montgomery area.
Hyundai officials also unveiled an artist's rendering of the 2,000,000 square-foot facility, which will be built on a 1,620 acre site. The plant will produce Sonata sedans and Santa Fe sport utility vehicles beginning in 2005. Hyundai's president and CEO says he's looking forward to working with Alabamians.
Hyundai Worldwide President and CEO Dong Jin Kim says, "Alabama has an excellent workforce. When they first open up the plant, the people of Alabama are not well trained, in the beginning. But when they are well trained they are very loyal to the company and they never leave the company."
