New System Rates Car Seat Ease, Not Safety

A new system may make it easier for parents to get their children situated in a vehicle.

The federal government announced a new 5-star rating system for car seats. It rates how easy a seat is, or isn't, to use. The ratings focus on four categories: the instructions, the installation, the labels, and how easy it is to secure your child in the seat.

Transportation Secretary Mary Peters says, "Car seats won't do any good, as we said, if they are not installed properly. One of the most important things we can do to make our children safer on our roadways is to make it easier for parents to install safety seats."
