Victim Identified in Tuesday's Fatal Opelika Trucking Accident

Opelika, Ala. (WSFA) -- Police have released the name of the man fataly injured in Tuesday's tractor-trailer accident in Opelika.

The victim has been positively identified as 57-year old Edgar K. Matthews of Charlotte, NC. 

Charlotte was a driver for G & P Trucking, headquartered in Columbia, SC. 

Dental records were used for the positive identification. 

It is believed that Matthews may have fallen asleep at the wheel and veered off the southbound lane of I-85 between the 63MM and 64MM and struck.

The truck then burst into flames. 

When the Opelika Fire Department extinguished the blaze, they discovered Matthews's body in the wreckage. 

Preliminary autopsy results indicate that Matthews died from massive blunt force trauma. He died instantly.

The accident remains under investigation by the Opelika Police Department and the Lee County Coroner's Office and the Alabama Dept. of Forensic Sciences.
