New Rail Yard Going Up Near Hyundai Site

Officials with the railroad company CSX Transportation said Friday they have plans to upgrade their rail network in Alabama. They also plan to build a new rail yard adjacent to the site of the new Hyundai plant south of Montgomery.

The Hyundai rail yard will provide storage space for the company's next-generation Sonata sedans and Santa Fe sport utilities, which are scheduled to begin rolling off the assembly line in 2005. The Jacksonville-based company says it will spend 32 million dollars this year to maintain and upgrade its 1,240 miles of track in the state. Last year, CSX was involved in ten Alabama economic-development projects, with investments totaling 355 million dollars and 185 new jobs.
