Montgomery Elementary School Principal Featured in Essence Magazine

A long-time principal in the Montgomery County School System is getting some national recognition. After 33 years on the job -- 13 of them at Highland Avenue Elementary School -- Pat Kornegay is the focus of a national ad in "Essence" Magazine.

She's one of 12 women selected by Pine-Sol as having made a significant difference in their communities.

"I'm in the centerfold," Kornegay said.

She remembers when she got the call alerting her to the honor. She thought it was a telemarketer at first.

"I thought, 'I don't want any magazines.'"

Kornegay led her school to become the only one in the school system to win Torchbearer status three years in a row. But she things Pine-Sol selection committee was equally impressed with her own personal struggles.

"I grew up in a single-parent household and had a vision of what I wanted to become," she explained.

So how did the magazine advertisement come about? At first, Kornegay was up for a $10,000 award for her work, sponsored by Pine-Sol's parent company, Clorox. When she didn't win, her nomination was forwarded for inclusion in the March issue of "Essence."

If you're asking who wrote that nomination, it was Kornegay's daughter.

Kornegay says she's equally as proud of her daughter, who's also an educator in Montgomery. She says she's proud that her daughter sees her as an inspiration.
