5-year old Andalusia Girl's Life and Death Inspires "Meredith's Miracles"

Posted: Updated:

The life and death of a little five year old girl from Andalusia is making a huge difference in the lives of many families today.

Meredith Mcglamory's parents say their little girl was full of life and energy right up until the week before she died.

The diagnosis came when Meredith was only three.

Her mother, Jana Mcglamory says her baby girl was diagnosed with Wilm's Tumor back in 2001.

Wilm's Tumor is a form of childhood cancer that attacked Meredith's kidneys.

The disease then spread to her lungs and a year's worth of chemotherepy, radiation and surgeries were not successful.

Ms. Mcglamory says the community ralled around Meredith offering prayers and support.

Then, through that inspiration, she started a foundation called "Meredith's Miracles" to help other families dealing with childhood cancer.

"If another child never had to die again, it kind of makes it all worth it," Mcglamory explains.

"It's awful...if we can help another family not lose their child..to me it makes it worth it."

Now, "Meredith's Miracles" is gearing up for it's second annual "Cookies with Characters" event, a fun-filled fund-raiser to help make a real difference in the lives of so many children.

The event includes characters like Mickey and Minney, Elmo and Tinkerbell. This year over 30 characters will be onhand for the children.

The event proved highly successful last year.

Meredith's grandmother, June Simpson, appeared on WSFA 12 News' community events show Alabama Live! on Friday to talk about the event.

She says last year over 1,100 people showed up for the event, and it raised a whopping $15,000.

To date, the organization has handed out over $60,000 for children in need and for many reasons, not just for cancer.

The 2nd annual event is coming up soon. The date is Saturday, February 23, 2008 at the Kiwanis Building from 1:00 to 4:00pm.

Chrissie schubert's homemade treats will be sponsoring all the cookies.

And their are two more miracles to tell you about.

Jana Mcglamory is pregnant with twin girls!
