Catfish Disaster Relief Funds Distributed

(L-R) Commissioner Ron Sparks and Congressman Artur Davis announce disaster assistance for catfish producers (L-R) Commissioner Ron Sparks and Congressman Artur Davis announce disaster assistance for catfish producers

MONTGOMERY- Agriculture & Industries Commissioner Ron Sparks and Congressman Artur Davis proudly announce that the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries will distribute approximately $3.1 million in disaster funds to 138 catfish producers in Alabama.

Producers who were affected by the drought that applied for federal disaster assistance and met the qualifications will be able to receive funds. The funding is provided by a USDA grant that will help reestablish the farmers purchasing power.

Commissioner Sparks said "We want to be able to get this money out as quickly as possible, we appreciate what the Alabama Congressional delegation has been able to do to provide assistance for the catfish industry. Alabama is the 2nd largest catfish producing state in the nation, this industry is vital to our state's economy."

"Farmers around the state of Alabama are those that keep the economy moving forward. It seems like there are fewer and fewer of them every year," said Davis. Producers should begin receiving their checks by mid March. For questions or more information about the Catfish Disaster Assistance Grant program contact Joe Cowart, Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries, at 334/240-7223.
