Dothan, Al (WSFA) -- It was in a 4-3 vote that the Dothan City Commission approved a new contract for City Manager Mike West.
Before voting, the commission listened to comments from the floor. A vast majority of those who spoke were in favor of renewing West's contract.
David Parsons who lives in Dothan said, "...Do what you know is best for this city and that is to approve Mike West's contract."
Also speaking in favor of West were several Dothan police officers.
WSFA 12 News learned that a letter from the Police Officers Union was sent out against West's renewal. However, many officers filled the meeting in support to the point that it was standing room only.
Police Chief John Powell said, "That was clearly represented tonight when the men and women came over to support him on the discussion about the contract."
There was opposition to West's renewal. Commissioners Keith Seagle, Amos Newsome and John Craig voted against the new contract.
District 6 Commissioner Keith Seagle said, "I think we're here to protect the people, and I don't think that we're doing it."
West's new contract will become effective starting on the February 27th.
