Tuscaloosa's Deontay Wilder Wins Spot on Olympic Boxing Squad

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Tuscaloosa's Deontay Wilder has earned a trip to Beijing, China, this summer.

The heavyweight is the newest member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic boxing team.

Wilder defeated Rafael Lima of Brazil by a 6-5 score Monday in the Olympic qualifier in Trinidad.

Today, he'll enter the ring against Cuba's Osmai Acosta Duarte for a shot at the gold medal.

But, win or lose, Wilder still is a member of the U.S. squad.

He dedicated the fight to his daughter Naiyea.

Wilder's next step is more training at the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
