Editorial: Diploma Mills

Writing an essay sometimes gets grade school students extra credit for one class.

Apparently, it also may get you a college degree.

Alabama's comparative lax regulations and oversight creates a haven for diploma mills to operate.

For the right price, a fake degree is available, typically through internet-based places with questionable and perhaps fraudulent accreditation.

Alabama has been labeled one of the worst states in failing to properly regulate and check the flow of diploma mills here.

Two agencies currently play roles in oversight. Putting the licensing process under one state agency would help to identify and regulate institutions that are not credible.

Pending legislation in both the Alabama House and Senate will consolidate the licensing of for-profit schools of higher education, putting it under the Alabama Commission on higher education.

We encourage legislators to pass these bills!
