Representative Holmes Files Civil Rights Complaint

Representative Alvin Holmes is speaking out against the Alabama Department of Conservation.

Holmes is filing a federal complaint with the Federal Government, requesting they suspend funds to the Alabama Department of Conservation.

He says that the Department of Conservation currently has 675 white employees and 59 black employees and those currenly hold some of the lowest paid positions.

" This is the worst agency in the state. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is the worst agency in the State of Alabama when it comes to the employment of blacks, they are the most discriminatory agency in the state."

State Conservation Commissioner Barnett Lawley says there are a total of 1,236 employees in the Conservation Department and that 154 are minorities. He says 143 are black.

Lawley says the department has made an agressive effort to hire minorities.
