Montgomery, Al. (WSFA) -- Montgomery police arrested 24-year old Johnny Gaston Friday just after he was released from the hospital. Now, he is facing reckless murder charges.
The charges stem from a Wednesday night street race that claimed the life of an innocent motorist.
The accident took place at the intersection of South Court Street and South Street near the Interstate 85 overpass around 8pm Wednesday night.
Witnesses told police they saw Gaston's 1979 Oldmobile coupe traveling west down South Street at high speeds when it ran the red light and slammed into a car driven by 30-year old Derrick Miller.
Miller was pronounced dead on the scene.
Some witnesses told police that before the crash they noticed Gaston's Oldsmobile and a white Ford Mustang racing on South Street, while others say they also saw the cars racing on I-85.
Gaston was tranported to Baptist South Emergency room with moderate-non-life-threatening injuries.
