Jefferson County Residents Get Free Rides

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Residents of Jefferson County can get free bus rides for four months.

The free rides on the transit system will begin next Thursday and end September 1st.

The chief of operations for Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford, Chris Hartsell, made the announcement Thursday after the Jefferson County Commission endorsed a proposal to offer the fares for all county riders, not just those who live in the city.

The full commission is expected to ratify that decision with a resolution on Tuesday.

Commissioner Jim Carns says the idea behind suspending the fares is to get more people riding buses.

The Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority and the Birmingham City Council voted earlier this week to suspend the fares.

County officials noted that gasoline prices have risen to an all-time high and are expected to keep rising.
