Desmond Wingard started working at WSFA 12 before he even graduated college. He started as an editor and photographer on the weekends, but later added the hat of associate producer, and was eventually hired as producer of WSFA 12's Today In Alabama .
In June of 2003, Desmond was promoted to producer of WSFA 12 News At 6:00. He has also served as an interim assignment editor and is currently Executive Producer. Desmond also served as interim news director for 3 months in 2006.
While earning his bachelor of arts degree in journalism at Troy University , the school of journalism awarded Desmond a scholarship and several awards. He was also appointed News Director of the university's student-run television station, where he produced two newscasts daily and managed a staff of 15-20.
During his time at Troy, his work earned him the Producer Of The Year Award twice from Alabama's Associated Press. He was also awarded Best Radio News Reporter in 2000, Troy's first-ever radio news award.
Desmond has also helped WSFA 12 win several Alabama Associated Press awards including Best Sports Program, Best Regularly Scheduled Newscast, and Best Spot news story. And in 2005, the 6:00 p.m. newscast he produced was nominated for an Emmy Award.
Desmond is home-grown, having been brought up in central Alabama. Besides work, Des, as most people call him, likes to work out, watch college football, hang out with friends, watch movies, and a lot of news.
